LESSON PACING

Below is a recommended pacing for this Cornerstone and the objective for each lesson. More information regarding each lesson can be located in the Cornerstone lesson plans.

LESSON OBJECTIVE
Lesson 1
Students will deconstruct Common Application essay prompts and identify narrative elements from selected stories in Growing Up Ethnic in America that align to or enhance responses to the essay prompts.
Lesson 2
Students will read and annotate a sample college essay and discuss how the essay successfully uses narrative techniques and could be enhanced with additional narrative techniques.
Lesson 3 Students will identify possible topics for their own college essays through textual analysis and collaborative conversations.
Lesson 4 Students will analyze essay structure and develop an outline for their own essays.
Lesson 5

Students will continue drafting their college essays and provide feedback to their peers.

*While this lesson is written as a one-day lesson, we recommend breaking this up to a three day lesson. Day 1: Students draft their essays. Day 2: Peer feedback (2 rounds). Day 3: Students revise and complete a 2nd draft. By the end of this Cornerstone, students will have completed a solid 2nd draft.
